World Vision Distributed 2.000 Collapsible Water Container to Evacuees

Mount Sinabung erupts again, sent powerful burst of hot ash and debris thousands of meters into the air early Friday, September 3, 2010, at 4.50 am local time (GMT+7). Activity of the volcano has increased since Thursday night, marked with a roar accompanied by volcanic tremor that could be felt eight kilometers away.

This eruption is the third and the biggest one during the week, following the first and second eruption on Sunday (29/8) and Monday (30/8). This last eruption forces villagers fleeing back to emergency shelters, even the number of evacuees has decreased to 20,062 people on September 2, 2010.

The Head of Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG), Surono said "This eruption was bigger because there was energy accumulation on Sinabung crater after the latest eruption on Monday" We hope it will be the last eruption as the biggest eruption usually becomes the latest one. Scientifically, the appearance of crater usually indicates the ending of volcanic activity in volcano eruption," he added.

One day before, World Vision Indonesia 's assessment team distributed 2,000 collapsible water containers for 3 emergency shelters as water, sanitation, and hygiene are still remain the main issue in the IDPs camp. The distribution was conducted in cooperation with Indonesian Christian Student Movement (GMKI) at Jambur Adil Makmur, Kabanjahe sub district, Jambur Ta Ras Berastagi, Berastagi sub district and Klasis Kabanjahe, Kabanjahe sub district.

Yacobus Runtuwene, the World Vision Indonesia's assessment team leader said "We hope the water bag can help evacuees collect clean water from nearest water tank truck that provided by government, especially for children who need clean water for their meals. The community also really need the clear socialization about Sinabung update, an early warning system to warn resident if the volcano will erupt."

The ministry of Social Affairs reported the meal for evacuees is still available for another 7 days ahead and the health minister mentioned the stock of medicine is enoughs.
